In a world grappling with the challenges of forced displacement and refugee crises, providing education opportunities to refugees is crucial in promoting their self-reliance, empowerment, and successful integration into host communities. One initiative that has been playing a vital role in this regard is the Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI) scholarship programme. We spoke to Deborah Kabambe Mapala, our colleague in Lusaka, Zambia, about the DAFI scholarships and her journey with Caritas Czech Republic.

Jean from Zambia is now the owner of a cassava processing business thanks to Caritas Czech Republic

Jean Makunga Habukali is a farmer living in Mongu, located in Zambia's Western Province. Jean was a radio presenter, but she lost her job in 2018. After that, Jean started farming cassava and cashew, however, she lacked proper facilities. Caritas Czech Republic provided Jean with cassava processing equipment and adequate space. Thanks to our help, Jean is now the proud owner of her own cassava farm.

I am now studying actuarial science thanks to the DAFI scholarship and Caritas Czech Republic, says Evelyn from Burundi

Evelyn is a young refugee from Burundi who has always dreamt of becoming an actuarial scientist. As a refugee, she has been facing many challenges. Thanks to Caritas Czech Republic, the DAFI scholarship programme and UNHCR, she got into university and is studying actuarial science today. “I am grateful for the DAFI scholarship because it not only gives me an opportunity to pursue my passion for actuarial science but also helps me contribute to the development of my host country and my home country, Burundi, once I graduate,” says Evelyn Mugabe.
