Damien, a refugee displaced by conflict from the Democratic Republic of Congo, faced significant barriers to accessing education due to the ongoing turmoil in his homeland. The conflict has not only disrupted educational infrastructure, but has also forced Damien and many others to flee their homes. Although Damien found safe haven in Zambia, access to education remained difficult for him as a refugee. Thanks to our support, Damien now has the opportunity to attend school in Zambia, where he can continue his education and build a brighter future.
Embracing education
In the face of adversity, Damien's story exemplifies resilience and hope. The 25-year-old was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Kivu region, but his life took an unexpected turn when he was forced to flee conflict and persecution in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He embarked on a journey to seek refuge in Zambia as he was separated from his family amidst the chaos of war. Compelled to leave behind his home, family, and everything familiar, he settled in the Mantapala refugee camp in Zambia, which over time became a second home to him.
In 2023, Damien was granted a DAFI Scholarship through Caritas Czech Republic, refusing to succumb to despair, he seized upon the opportunity to rebuild his life through education. This scholarship not only provided financial assistance but also served as a symbol of hope and encouragement for other refugee students.
‘‘With the support from Caritas Czech Republic, my dream of pursuing higher education became a reality. I have enrolled in Computer Studies at Lusaka Business and Technical College with a newfound sense of purpose and possibility.” Damien recognised education as a beacon of hope—a pathway to a brighter future. With determination and resilience, he enrolled in courses, eager to expand his knowledge and skills.
Since embarking on his educational journey, Damien has immersed himself wholeheartedly in the world of computer science. From mastering programming languages to exploring the intricacies of networking and database management, Damien's thirst for knowledge knows no bounds. Driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in his community, Damien is harnessing the power of technology to address real-world challenges.
Caritas Czech Republic continues to help educate refugees in Zambia
Accessing education in a foreign country poses significant challenges in the absence of adequate support. As Caritas Czech Republic continues its aim to support and help refugees in Zambia and around the world, stories like Damien's serve as a testament to the enduring impact of compassion and solidarity.
We are also helping to enhance the education and livelihood of refugees and their host communities in Zambia. We want to enable them to become self-reliant individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to improve their living standards.
