The DAFI scholarship programme is empowering refugees through education, says Deborah Kabambe Mapala

In a world grappling with the challenges of forced displacement and refugee crises, providing education opportunities to refugees is crucial in promoting their self-reliance, empowerment, and successful integration into host communities. One initiative that has been playing a vital role in this regard is the Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI) scholarship programme. We spoke to Deborah Kabambe Mapala, our colleague in Lusaka, Zambia, about the DAFI scholarships and her journey with Caritas Czech Republic.

Can you tell us how long you have been working at Caritas Czech Republic and what is your position at the organisation?

I have been working for Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia since 2017. I started as a Social Counselor but, I am currently overseeing the Dafi scholarship programme which has been running since 1992. The programme is financed by the German Government and has been supporting refugee students worldwide for the past 30 years. In Zambia, Caritas Czech Republic has been at the forefront of implementing this transformative program with support from the Commissioner for Refugees, the German Embassy and UNHCR.

What exactly is the DAFI scholarship programme about?

The DAFI scholarship programme aims to empower refugees and enable them to pursue higher education thus equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary for their personal and professional growth. By offering financial aid, mentoring, and career guidance, DAFI strives to enhance the prospects of refugee students and their families, leading to self-reliance and bolstering their capacity to contribute to their communities as most of them end up working in the refugee settlements, particularly as volunteer teachers and community workers. DAFI also aims to develop qualified individuals who can contribute to the reconstruction of their countries of origin if they ever move back.

What are some of the achievements or successes you have witnessed during your time as the DAFI coordinator?

During my tenure as the DAFI Coordinator for Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia, I have witnessed how the programme has changed the lives of many refugee students. Under my guidance, over 70 students have been selected for the scholarship, with 28 successfully graduating. Some of these graduates have gone on to represent Zambia in global forums, secure employment opportunities, and actively engage in community projects.

What are some of the challenges you face in your work?

The journey towards success has not been without its challenges. One such challenge faced by some students is the English language proficiency required for academic communication. While the DAFI programme provides support and resources for language development, additional efforts are needed to ensure that the language barrier does not hinder academic progress.

Another obstacle is the high cost associated with study permits, as well as the translation and validation of foreign academic qualifications. These financial barriers can limit access to higher education for refugee students.  It is essential to advocate for the abolition of study permit fees for refugees and the recognition of their foreign educational qualifications to help overcome these problems and create equal opportunities.

Moreover, employment opportunities for DAFI graduates can be scarce, both within the refugee community and in the host society.

How has working at Caritas Czech Republic helped you in your personal and professional growth?

The DAFI scholarship programme has not only provided educational opportunities for refugee students but has also enriched their lives in numerous ways. Through the programme, I have sharpened my interpersonal and management skills, gaining experience in report writing, budget preparation, and public speaking. This first-hand experience at the forefront of carrying out educational initiatives has enabled me to make a positive contribution to the field of education and advocate for more inclusive policies.

What are your hopes for the scholarship programme for refugees in the future?

While the achievements of the DAFI scholarship program in Zambia and the world over are great, there is still work to be done to ensure that all refugee students have access to quality education opportunities. It is important to advocate for government-funded scholarships specifically targeted at refugees and the removal of study permit fees, making education more accessible and inclusive. By investing in education, we invest in the potential and future success of refugees, enabling them to rebuild their lives and contribute to their communities.

DAFI scholarship, an instrument for changing the lives of refugees

The DAFI scholarship programme funded by the German Embassy and UNHCR and implemented by Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia has been crucial in transforming the lives of refugee students, providing them with opportunities for education, empowerment, and self-reliance. Through the dedication and guidance of individuals like Deborah Kabambe Mapala, the programme supports refugee education and highlights the transformative potential that education has for all individuals, regardless of their background. As we celebrate 30 years of the DAFI scholarship programme, we must continue to strive for greater inclusivity and accessibility in education, ensuring that no refugee is left behind.
