Green Solutions for Sustainable Development and Growth in Monze District: A Path Towards Resilient Agriculture and Economic Empowerment

In the heart of Southern Province, Zambia, we have launched the Green Solutions for Sustainable Development and Growth in Monze District project that envisions a future where small and medium-scale farmers, with a particular focus on women and youth, actively participate in functional and market-oriented diversified, resilient, and green value chains within the agricultural sector. This ambitious initiative not only aims to transform local farming practices but also seeks to catalyse the growth of green businesses, fostering a sustainable and prosperous community in Monze.

Empowering Farmers through Knowledge and Capacity Building

At the project's core lies a commitment to empowering small and medium-scale farmers. Over 1650 farmers from Monze District will receive extensive training in sustainable agronomic practices. The training includes essential aspects such as crop diversification, post-harvest handling, processing and storage, natural resource management, agroforestry, and climate change resilience. By enhancing their skills and knowledge, these farmers will be better equipped to navigate the challenges of modern agriculture while minimising their environmental footprint.

In addition to agricultural training, financial literacy is crucial to providing improved access to financial services. By establishing saving groups and facilitating agricultural loans, at least 500 farmers will gain the financial support needed to implement sustainable practices effectively.

Market linkages and premium pricing are a Win-Win for Farmers

Connecting farmers to markets is a pivotal aspect of the project. Approximately 1000 farmers will benefit from the 260 Brands out-grower scheme, focusing on organic soya production with a guaranteed premium price. This ensures farmers' fair income and encourages sustainable and organic farming practices. By linking farmers to markets in Lusaka and locally, we will create a robust and interconnected agricultural ecosystem that benefits producers and consumers.

Recognising the need for a holistic approach to sustainability through this initiative, we will support five small and medium-scale businesses in Monze District. Through business development assistance, management capacity building, product certification, and adherence to green economy principles, these businesses are poised for a successful transition to a more sustainable economic model. Furthermore, businesses invested in this initiative can access business loans through collaboration with ZANACO Bank, providing a financial boost for their green initiatives.

International and local expertise for sustainable agriculture

The Green Solutions project benefits from the expertise of Mendel University in Brno and the Czech company Holistic Solutions. These entities bring cutting-edge knowledge in sustainable and resilient farming practices, post-harvest processing, natural resource management, agroforestry, and green economy principles. Mendel University will conduct applied research to enhance the productivity of soya and sunflower production while using sustainable farming practices, focusing on analysing minerals in selected crops and possibilities of biofortification.

The involvement of partner governments is also integral to the success of this project. The Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, and the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment will play pivotal roles in facilitating the implementation of the project. This collaboration ensures that the initiatives align with national policies and contribute to the broader sustainable development goals of the region.

The Green Revolution, transforming the local agricultural landscape in Monze District

The Green Solutions for Sustainable Development and Growth in Monze District project is a beacon of hope for the future of agriculture in Southern Zambia. This initiative sets the stage for a resilient, sustainable, and economically vibrant Monze District by empowering farmers, supporting green businesses, and leveraging international expertise. Through collaboration and innovation, this project will pave the way for a green revolution that not only transforms the local agricultural landscape but also serves as a model for sustainable development worldwide.

Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia has dedicated the last decade to fostering self-reliance in numerous Zambian communities.
