In 2024, Caritas Czech Republic made remarkable strides in improving the lives of Zambians. Highlights of the year include recognition for climate-smart solutions, empowering refugee women through storytelling, and providing practical tools and training for sustainable livelihoods. Each achievement reflects our commitment to fostering resilience, inclusion, and a brighter future for all.
1. Caritas Czech Republic shines at the national agricultural and commercial show
This year, Caritas Czech Republic proudly participated for the first time in Zambia’s prestigious National Agricultural and Commercial Show. The event was an opportunity to showcase our innovative solutions for sustainable development and climate resilience. Our work earned us the Second Prize for Best Climate Smart Initiative, a recognition of our dedication to promoting environmentally friendly practices. Visitors to our exhibition stand learned about how we are transforming lives through climate-smart agriculture, education, and livelihood support.
2. Supporting farmers in Monze to thrive despite climate challenges
Erratic rainfall during the 2023/2024 farming season devastated crops across Monze District, leaving many farmers struggling. Caritas Czech Republic stepped in to provide 150 farmers with weather insurance payouts, offering a crucial safety net during difficult times.Beyond immediate relief, we worked with over 1,450 farmers, distributing drought-resistant seeds such as millet and sorghum. Farmers also received hands-on training in sustainable farming methods through our Farmer Field Schools, equipping them to adapt and thrive in an unpredictable climate.
3. Reopening of our office in Mantapala refugee settlement
May 2024 marked a significant moment for Caritas Czech Republic as we reopened our office in the Mantapala Refugee Settlement. This initiative renewed our focus on enhancing the livelihoods of refugees and host communities through practical and impactful activities. We trained farmers and provided them with support for launching honey production businesses. Over 900 beehives were distributed, benefiting refugees and host community members. By fostering self-reliance and socio-economic integration, we’re helping communities take charge of their futures.
4. Amplifying the voices of refugee women through storytelling
In June, we supported the launch of Lusaka Urban Refugee Women’s Stories, a book by Namibian feminist Mimi Mwiya. This collection highlights the resilience and courage of refugee women who have overcome immense challenges to rebuild their lives. Held on World Refugee Day, the launch featured engaging discussions on the impact of storytelling and the vital role of refugee women in their communities. The event not only amplified these powerful voices but also inspired others to take action in support of refugees.
5. Helping farmers build resilience to climate change in Western Zambia
In Western Zambia, we empowered over 42,600 farmers with tools and skills to overcome the challenges of climate change. Farmers learned how to use weather forecasts to better plan their activities, access online markets using platforms like Maano, and produce high-quality seeds for better harvests. The program also achieved gender balance, ensuring equal opportunities for both women and men to thrive.
We continue to create a lasting change for Zambia’s communities
In 2024, Caritas Czech Republic continued its mission to empower communities and promote sustainable growth across Zambia. Whether it was through helping farmers overcome climate challenges, empowering refugees, or amplifying unheard voices, our initiatives have had a lasting impact. Together with our partners, we look forward to continuing this journey of resilience and innovation for years to come.
