6 ways Caritas Czech Republic supports refugees to become self-sufficient

There are currently more than 122 million displaced people in the world. Whether they have fled abroad or stayed in their countries, they are trying to start again from zero in new places. Refugees, despite many prejudices, do not wait with their hand out for help, but instead want to work, study and stand on their own two feet. But they need support at the beginning to succeed. Caritas Czech Republic is helping them to do just that.

Did you know that basket weaving is one of the oldest crafts in the world? You would probably not expect that even refugees in Zambia make a living by weaving baskets. In the Mayukwayukwa refugee settlement, located in Zambia's Western province, there is a team of women who have come together to make a business out of it. My life was hard, but now it is changing for the better, says Roza, a refugee in Zambia, after receiving support on her small business from Caritas Czech Republic.

Poultry farming is one of the fastest-growing agricultural sectors in Zambia. Despite its growth potential, it still faces several challenges. From disease outbreaks, to limited access to quality feed and veterinary services, to inadequate infrastructure, which poses a challenge for many small-scale farmers entering the market. Like many others, Caroline faced these challenges in trying to set up her business. Thanks to our support, Caroline now successfully runs her own poultry business.

My dream of pursuing higher education became a reality, says Damien, a refugee in Zambia

Damien, a refugee displaced by conflict from the Democratic Republic of Congo, faced significant barriers to accessing education due to the ongoing turmoil in his homeland. The conflict has not only disrupted educational infrastructure, but has also forced Damien and many others to flee their homes. Although Damien found safe haven in Zambia, access to education remained difficult for him as a refugee. Thanks to our support, Damien now has the opportunity to attend school in Zambia, where he can continue his education and build a brighter future.

I want to become an entrepreneur and give back to my community, says Baruani, a refugee student at the Cavendish University in Zambia

Baruani is a 24-year-old student originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He fled his home country with his family to neighbouring Zambia to escape violence and conflict. They found safety in the refugee settlement of Mantapala, but Baruani wanted something more - an education that would also allow him to help other refugees. Thanks to our support, he is now studying at a university in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka.
