Financial Inclusion through Traditional Leadership (FIT)

Full name: Chiefdoms for Savings– Luapula Inclusion in Financial Empowerment (Financial Inclusion Through Traditional Leadership (FIT) Sustainable Savings Group Coverage)

Duration: December 2018 - January 2022

FSD Zambia, through the Financial Inclusion through Traditional Leadership (FIT) project aims to improve financial inclusion in Luapula Province, particularly for the 80% of the population who live under the poverty line with traditional leaders at the core of implementation. In Luapula, most people live in rural areas and in chiefdoms that are located far from district centers. Formal financial service providers (FSPs) are scattered around a few district centers and have not delivered financial services to the rural and low-income individuals in Luapula.

Implementation and Results:

  • In Luapula, most people live in rural areas and in chiefdoms that are located far from district centers and lack of formal financial services (banking services as savings, credit and the like). CCR, with engagement of traditional leaders, promoted the financial inclusion of rural communities in the province and impulsed the creation of saving groups. The aim is to create 1000 saving groups within 4 years that will provide unofficial financial services (e.g. loans) to people living in rural areas.
  • 15 so called Master Trainers were trained. During the project, they accesed to remote areas and started creating and mentoring/monitoring saving groups.
