Equipment support to Maternity Wing of Lewanika General Hospital

Full Name: Equipment support to Maternity Wing of Lewanika General Hospital in Western Province, Zambia

Duration: February-August 2016

Supply of quality medical equipment to the new Maternity Wing of LGH, installation and usage orientation of LGH health workers. Quality medical equipment in an essential condition for provision of quality healthcare services to pregnant women, young mothers and newborns. Properly equipped operating theatres will allow quick response to maternal emergencies, independently on operating needs of other patients. Quick and quality response to pregnancy, maternity and newborn related cases will contribute to decrease of maternal and neonatal mortality rate in LGH, as well as in Western Province at large.

Implementation and Results:

  • Maternity Wing of Lewanika General Hospital (LGH) now possesses modern theatre equipment that allows it to provide access to quality services to mothers (about 3100 deliveries per year) and new-borns in Western Province. The hospital is able to quickly respond to maternal emergencies, independently operate without being dependant on needs of other departments of LGH. The newly equipped theatre shall directly contribute to decrease of the critical time from decision to incision and hence decrease the maternal and neonatal mortality rate in LGH, as well as in Western Province at large. The statistical results are yet to be seen over a longer period of time.
