Refugees in Mantapala settlement in Northern Zambia are allowed to work and farm. As a result, they have helped develop the previously underdeveloped Nchelenge District.
Refugees and the hosts who want to farm are given small plots, those who want to start businesses are allowed to travel to buy goods and materials. And the locals are benefiting too, from better access to schools and health centres. The new central market allows them to sell their goods, whereas previously they would have had to travel for several hours.
