Loveness from Zambia thrives in farming with Caritas Czech Republic's support

Subsistence farming is one of the main agricultural activities in Zambia. Despite its importance for many families, many farmers still face several challenges. From limited access to quality seeds and fertilisers to inadequate irrigation infrastructure, small-scale farmers struggle. Like many others, Loveness, a 50-year-old widow in the Meheba refugee settlement, faced these challenges to expand her farm. Thanks to our support, Loveness now successfully runs her farming business.

Turning Knowledge into Power

In 2021, Loveness learned about Caritas Czech Republic's support for small-scale farmers and applied for the Agriculture Diversification programme. "I attended the business skills training, which showed me how to enhance and sustain my farming business," she shares.

After completing a 5-day capacity-sharing training and a 3-day technical skills course facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Loveness received a cash grant.

With newfound knowledge and resources, Loveness cultivated approximately 1.75 hectares of soy beans and 1 hectare of maize during the 2021/22 farming season. She used her income for labour and seeds, supplementing with fertiliser provided by Caritas Czech Republic. The financial assistance I have received following the training became the catalyst for my ambitions,” Loveness appreciates.

Reaping the rewards

The income from her farming business has enabled Loveness to acquire a motorcycle, household furniture, and other goods. She is also now able to cover her grandchildren's school requirements. Loveness joined a savings group in 2021, an initiative introduced to them by the organisation with support from the UNHCR, where members pool savings and can take out loans, operating on a 6-month cycle. Diversifying her income streams, Loveness now trades vegetables and uses her motorbike as a taxi, employing a youth to operate it.

"I am thankful to Caritas Czech Republic for the support of the start-up capital. With this support, my farming business has progressed, my livelihood has changed,” she says.

Empowering a Brighter Future

Caritas Czech Republic's efforts in Zambia empower individuals and communities by facilitating access to agricultural inputs, enhancing produce value, and providing market access. Through comprehensive training programmes, farmers like Loveness transform their farms into hubs of innovation and productivity.
