Edith, an entrepreneur from Mandali Village in Zambia’s Southern province, has empowered over 100 people by establishing 14 savings groups thanks to the financial management and business skills training from Caritas Czech Republic. Initially struggling with limited funds and market access for her small business, Edith used her newly acquired skills to enhance her business and become a master trainer, she now leads and supports her community by sharing her knowledge and experience.
Facing business challenges in a rural setting
Running a small business in a rural village has always been a challenge for Edith. She sells a variety of items, but transportation and market access remain significant hurdles. “My finances were always stretched thin, making it difficult to invest in my business,” Edith shares. “And with the water shortages in our village, sustaining my livelihood became even harder.”
Caritas Czech Republic recognised Edith’s potential and the obstacles she faced, offering her a comprehensive training programme in financial management and business skills. This support empowered Edith to better plan, save, and reinvest in her businesses. Additionally, she was selected as one of 25 master trainers to help form village savings groups, an initiative introduced to them by the organisation, where members pool savings and can take out loans, operating on a monthly cycle. This role boosted her confidence and allowed her to share her newfound knowledge with others in her community.
Since completing the training, Edith has successfully formed 14 village savings groups, more than any other master trainer in her area. Her success has inspired others in the community, with many seeking her advice on forming their own groups. Meanwhile, Edith’s business has flourished, with plans to expand into broiler chicken farming and cattle trading, securing a brighter future for her family.
A heartfelt thanks and vision for the future
“I am so grateful to Caritas Czech Republic for the skills and support they gave me,” Edith shares. “Forming 14 savings groups has been a big accomplishment, and I hope Caritas Czech Republic will continue to train us in more skills, especially gardening and off-season farming, to help us adapt to climate change.”
Caritas Czech Republic's support has profoundly impacted Edith’s life, enabling her to grow her business, uplift her community, and become a leader in her village.
