Behind the scenes of Caritas Czech Republic: Meet the team behind the DAFI Scholarship Programme

For young refugees, education is more than a pursuit—it’s a chance to rebuild their future and contribute to society. Yet, financial barriers and adapting to a new academic system make higher education a challenge. The DAFI Scholarship Programme opens doors for refugee students in Zambia, turning aspirations into reality. Behind its success is a dedicated team providing guidance, mentorship, and support. We spoke to Credwin and Kateule from Caritas Czech Republic about their work and the impact of education on refugee scholars.

“Education is the key to empowerment” – Credwin Sichone, DAFI Scholarship Coordinator

I joined Caritas Czech Republic in 2017 as a Livelihoods Mentor, focusing on training and entrepreneurship for refugees. My work evolved into education support, leading me to become a DAFI Education Counsellor and later, in 2024, the DAFI Scholarship Coordinator.

In this role, I oversee scholarship administration, budgeting, and student mentorship. I liaise with partner organisations, universities, and scholars to ensure that students receive the financial and academic support they need. Beyond managing funds, I advocate for refugee students to receive equal opportunities and institutional support, addressing barriers that hinder their academic progress.

One of the most fulfilling parts of my job is witnessing students graduate, gain employment, and positively impact their families and communities. Many of them return to help others, reinforcing the idea that education is not just personal growth but a tool for uplifting entire communities.

“I love seeing students grow and succeed” – Kateule Simfukwe, DAFI Education Counsellor

I joined Caritas Czech Republic in 2018 as a Youth Mentor before transitioning into my role as DAFI Education Counsellor. My work is student-centred, ensuring that scholars not only pass their courses but excel.

My role involves monitoring academic performance, offering career guidance, and providing psychosocial support. A large part of my job is fieldwork—I regularly visit universities and colleges to meet with students, help them navigate challenges, and ensure they remain motivated. Many students need emotional support as they adjust to new academic environments, and my role allows me to be that guiding presence.

What makes the DAFI Scholarship Programme unique is its comprehensive support. Beyond paying for tuition, it covers housing, books, food, and clothing, eliminating financial distractions so students can focus entirely on their studies. This holistic approach ensures that scholars have every opportunity to succeed.

How Caritas Czech Republic supports refugees in Zambia

Access to higher education remains a challenge for many refugees in Zambia. The Albert Einstein German Refugee Academic Initiative (DAFI) continues to provide a vital opportunity for young refugees to enrol in university, pursue careers of their choice, and secure a brighter future.

In Zambia, Caritas Czech Republic and UNHCR work together to support refugee scholars through advocacy, financial aid, and career guidance. The programme does not just fund education—it ensures that students receive the mentorship and resources they need to reach their full potential.
